Change is Our Ally
-- from Rama's tapes
"What
causes us to change? Sometimes a piece of music causes us to change.
Sometimes the way the light falls on a particular day. Someone says
something - it opens a doorway to us."
You will never attain enlightenment. Neither will I. That is true. The
self who you are, and who I am in this moment will change again and
again. We will shed the layers of the self, and if eternity smiles on
us, and if we accept the opportunities along the path, then change can
lead to a self, or lack of self that is enlightenment.
Ram Dass once said that "enlightenment is the biggest disappointment
to the ego."
We know that change is a certainty of life and a condition of the universe.
As mystics, who have our vision set on enlightenment,
we open our awareness to those moments that provide us with doorways
to "self" destruction. True? Well sure, if you understand that
the self must be destroyed many many many times on the way to God Realization.
I say this tongue in cheek, but for those of you who have a morbid sense
of life and death, don't take this literally. It is through the process
of destruction of our concepts of self that we reach higher levels of
consciousness. This form of self destruction is totally divorced from
the common human pastimes that harm body, mind or spirit. You understand.
Change, then, is our ally, if we keep our focus
on enlightenment.
I have been going through a change, I think. But . . . (Sometimes it
feels like I am stuck in time and space, like a bruised CD that keeps
repeating the same three words over and over.)
You know, same old thought patterns that are boring and limiting. Same
old neuroses and doubts. Same old cycles of me.
But . . .then I put on a CD, or if I am really lucky, I attend a concert
or two. I have confessed before that I am a parrot head. (Not recovering,
just enjoying!)
So one night this week I wasted away in ParrotHead Nirvana, blending
those concoctions that help me hang on. I danced and sang with the energy
of the music, the people and the night.
The next night, and day, another concert. The music this time was played
by perhaps the world's best Fiddler, Alisdair Fraser. A virtuoso who
gets into the highest spaces where the violin, the player, and the audience
are one.
So I was able to change, to dance through the doorway of music.
Today, back in my house, the same old me, dealing with the same old
stuff. Except, I can still hear the music, and nothing will ever be
the same!
