Miracle of Silence

"The greatest miracle is silence. When everything is silent, when your mind becomes silent in meditation - by yourself or with a teacher - the world stops. Time stops. Life stops, as we know it, then something happens. We feel a feeling. We feel a longing. It kind of overtakes the spirit. We feel an eternality ... We feel an infinitude of being. And there's a longing. It's familiar. Suddenly this world, which has taken on such significance, doesn't really matter ... There's a beautiful longing and that longing is fulfilled then by a suffusion of light. The longing causes something to happen. It causes the being to grow into light."

- Rama

Enlightenment Cycle: Miracles

This powerful combination of words explains the unexplainable. Something in their message reminded me of what it was like to sit with Rama.

I don’t know what I can add to the message of these words that would be of any value. Perhaps, if you never had the opportunity to sit with Rama in person, my experience could be helpful.

When I recall my experiences, it is in the hope of pulling the experience to a student, or a reader. Living in the past is a silly pass-time, except when we journey into a state of illumination and heightened, pristine awareness.

I sat at the Beverly Wilshire Theater somewhere in the middle of a sea of students. I knew five or six students by name, and the other few hundred were just a blur of semi-familiar faces and feet.

I was sitting with my legs crossed, the music of Tangerine Dream was pounding into my heart charka, and I was gazing at the teacher on the stage known to his students as Rama. As I gazed at him, the lighting changed, and I was looking at a negative imprint, something like a film held up to the light. Suddenly there was a shift, and Rama was a-glow with golden light, and the light began to permeate the room like a fog. That is about the time that everything stopped. There was only silence, but I can remember the longing. In that familiar silence an eternal memory awakened and I knew that I was home.

Perhaps this experience is the only reason I continue to meditate. It is the quintessential moment when there is only light. It is truly the miracle that we all seek. What more is there?

These words from Rama are encouraging: “You don’t have to be enlightened to have this experience. You just have to start the inner journey.”
