And Why Samadhi?

“In the Samadhis there is dissolution and undifferentiated reality. There’s no sense of light, there’s no sense of joy, there’s no sense of god, there’s no sense of perfection, there’s no sense of bliss, there’s no sense of peace. All these are experiences that are had by an individual, but you are no longer individual. Your individuality melts and merges with eternity.”

- Rama

Samadhi and the Superconscious States
Rama - September 10th, 1982

And the point is? This quote is taken out of the context of the whole tape, but when you take this bite and chew on it, don’t you kind of wonder if there is a point? I do. Take a look at this other bite from the same tape.

“Thou art that. That thou art. And that sense of that timeless perfection of what you are, again, not from a human point of view, that’s Salvakalpa Samadhi, you have become God, in other words, you have become eternity . . . .That doesn’t mean that today you sat down and had a wonderful meditation and just felt ecstasy everywhere, you felt the pure joy of perfection, light was everywhere, there was nothing but light. That’s not it. As long as you’re still having these types of perceptions you’re having very wonderful advanced meditations, and that’s quite fine, but you haven’t come near the Samadhis yet.”

I have been taught that it is a very unfruitful practice to evaluate meditation. It is. And yet, I fall into the trap of personal evaluation. Wow! That was a good one! Damn, what a horrible meditation!

Now, add to the mix Rama’s attempt to point the way towards something beyond advanced meditation. He attempts in this tape to point the way to something not only that is wordless, but experience-less. Of course, it is not possible to talk about it, or even point the way, but Rama does his best to paint a picture.

It is pretty easy for you and I to sit down and talk about out very wonderful advanced meditations, where we romp around in the light, filled with bliss and joy beyond comprehension. “That” we can talk about, relate to, and frankly use as a kind of enticement for students who are beginning the pathway. Why wouldn’t a person want to feel peace, happiness, bliss? Why wouldn’t a person want to experience the endless mystical adventures that advanced meditation offers?

So I wonder aloud, why bother with Samadhi? Why not hang out in the land of advanced meditation. Light shows, bright joys, unfathomable ecstasy! Now that sounds all right to me. Pretty awesome place to play and learn.

Why would I want to leave this wonderful state of high awareness to go into Samadhi? Now, I can almost get Salvakalpa Samadhi. Sure, merge with God, merge with eternity, know that “you are that”. That seems like a most excellent destination. I could leave advanced meditation for that.

But, there is more, Nirvakalpa Samadhi. That is like reaching for the gold ring on the carousel. Only it isn’t, because it is void, in has no experience, it would be like reaching for the gold ring, but never knowing when you “got it”. Once you make that final stretch and pull the gold ring into you, you have no experience. You are just gone, just dissolved. You are “not”. You have no experience or sense of all those beautiful worlds of advanced meditation, or even the awareness that you are eternity that you get in the lesser Samadhis.

Sorry, but this is just not the best ad for enlightenment. Nirvakalpa Samadhi is full self-realization, enlightenment, or at least the beginning of full enlightenment, which is of course, endless.

This is perplexing. So as I sit and evaluate my evolution in the land of meditation and enlightenment, I feel the endless merry-go-round. I know too well the carousel with all of its sensorial delights, I get that. The motion up and down and around, the wind, the turning and spinning, the music. But I have to tell you, I rarely sat on the outside circle where the horses had no ability to move up and down. I rarely sat on the outside reaching for the gold ring. I liked the experience of the ride.

So some students who studied with Rama are moving into the beginning stages of enlightenment. I don’t know which of the Samadhis have “not” been experienced. I suspect anyone who has left the exciting land of advanced meditation must understand this not quite exact quote from Ram Dass “Enlightenment is the biggest disappointment your ego will ever face.”

I am not having much luck making sense out of any of this, perhaps because there is really no way to process and understand it. Maybe these final quotes from Rama will help me understand that which is beyond understanding.

“So I spent eleven years meditating and being part of a spiritual community and working for the welfare of others constantly . . . But then after eleven years, suddenly I started to go into Samadhi every day. Starting really in 1980. And I had no choice. It was not something I could choose . . . Eternity takes care of everything.”
