Selfless Giving

-- from Rama's tapes

Try it, you will like it.

"There are different pathways to immortality, to this experience of enlightenment. There's no one way to go about it... Give of yourself, give of your time, and you'll be happy, you'll be free."
-Rama

Rama said, "I don't see too much selfless giving, even among the people who talk about it." In almost all cosmologies that talk about enlightenment there is a common thread that you can find. That common thread is selfless giving.

I had a dear friend who 'stood out' in the world because she was different, and took hard knocks because of that difference. She used to say, frequently, "If you're going to talk the talk, you have to be willing to walk the walk."

Each day presents dozens and more opportunities to practice the yoga of selfless giving. A true act of giving, makes the giver feel good during the action, and after the action. It is fun, and it is done without attachment to results. The trick, or course, is to truly consider someone or something else, instead of yourself.

I have observed acts of selfless giving. I understand such acts, when truly selfless, don't want praise or attention from the world. However, pointing out examples of such people and their actions of selfless giving are signposts for all of us.

Here are some folks I have seen "walk the walk". Rama, who gave endlessly and completely to the world. Liz, the webmistress of this site, who gives each moment to the world. The development team at RamaLila who gives time and loads of energy to design and maintain this light, this site. Jenna at Dharma Center who continues to keep the dream of enlightenment alive by sharing her light through writing and teaching.

The problem with naming names, is that lots of people are left out. This list could be endless. If you were writing this article, the names would be different. Perhaps, you might choose to make your own list of people who give selflessly. You may even want to thank them personally, inwardly or otherwise. Seems to me that even the most humble people could use a thank you and a smile.

Rama presented thousands of techniques that were intended to help students along their own pathway to enlightenment. Techniques presented here may be useful for you. The teachings are meant to be used by students who are serious about their practice, and their own enlightenment.

A special thanks to
Lynne (Samadhi) for her writing, and the inspiration to begin this feature.
